Important dates to remember

1.    No School tomorrow
2.    June 13: Twin Day
3.    June 14: SK graduation
4.    June 19: Last Field trip to Brewer park near Carleton University: price for the bus fair is to be confirmed. We need 3 volunteers please. I will send the form next week Insha'Allah. We will be going with the grade 1s.
The purpose for this trip:
·       is off course for the kids to have fun
·        for SKs to mingle and develop friendship with the grade 1s, this will Insha'Allah ease their transition next year.

5.    June 22-23: End of Year Celebration

6.    June 26: Reptile Show for SK-JK

          Time: 9:15-10:15am
          Place: Abraar Gym. 
          Price: $5.00. please send the $5.00 with your child before Friday June 22, 2012.

Alhamdulillah! We are at the end of Phonic book # 7. We only have 2 more vowels to cover. 


For the month of June we will focus on reviewing:
  1. Islamic manners
  2.  Stories of the Prophets
  3. Behavioural management strategies
  4. proper social conduct
  5. Cooperation
  6. Early literacy (letter recognition, sounds of the letters, sounds of vowels, strategies of reading 3 letter words, early writing skills eg. copying words from the board)
  7. science and art units
Students will be evaluated on the above 7 points for term 3

Masha Allah! The SKs have been working very hard for the last 2 months preparing for the graduation ceremony.


Homework:

 After completing the Mercy of the Prophet (saw) I asked the students of they have learned/liked about the unit. I then typed up their answers and compiled into a mini booklet. The SKs will Insha'Allah proudly present their work during the ceremony.

I sent  each child his/her copy  for further practice. kindly insure that your child returns it by Monday.

End of Reading Program

Dear parents,

Today was Tr. Nirmeen's last day. We would like to thank Tr. Nirmeen for all of her hard work and dedication. May Allah reword her greatly. We wish Tr. Nirmeen a save and beneficial trip insha Allah. Please keep her in your duas.

We celebrated the end of our reading program today. Students received certificate for completing the reading program.

Congratulation SKs!

  • Aya received a special gift for reading the most books amongst the girls. Masha Allah! Aya read total of 19 books.
  • Zaid received a special gift for reading the most books amongst the boys. Masha Allah! Zaid read total of 16 books.

A letter to friends and families

Wow! SKs were very excited to write a letter to their friends and families. Masha Allah! It was nice to see so many eager writers. We ask that you read your child's letter with excitement.

Please remember that our field trip is tomorrow. Please come prepared to:

  1. Have Fun!
  2. Follow safety rules (stay with the class, ask before petting the animals).
  3. Wear weather appropriate clothing.
  4. Bring water bottle.

    Newsletter

    Assalamoalaikum

    Language:
    We completed Phonic book 6. In this book we explored with the sounds of Y, X, ch, sh, and th. Students demonstrated understanding of the importance of learning sounds of letterers/blending sounds as this will help us read complex words. I'm very impressed with SKs enthusiasm to learn new words.

    Next week
    We will exploring vowels covered in Phonic book 7. Phonic book 7 introduces the sounds of: Qu, OU, OI, UE, ER, and AR.


    Reading Program:
    MashaAllah! We have come a long way. Thank you for for assisting  us to become great readers.

    Please note that the reading program will come to end 3rd week of May. SKs are very passionate learners, and with your continues involvements and encouragement they will continue and flourishing inshaAllah.


    Buddy Reading time:
    We have adopted buddy reading system. Last week  we paired up friends from reading
    • 5 and 4
    • 3 and 1.   
    They took turn reading to each other. Buddy reading is a great program because it builds student's conference. It also encourages young readers to become fluent reader. Most importantly it makes reading fun and exciting for young readers.  In the future we will ask our buddies (grade 4) to read with us inshaAllah.

    Shared Reading:
    Shared reading is a interactive reading where the teacher and the students share responsibility of reading. Shared reading provides students with a positive and enjoyable reading experience.

    Interactive Writing:
    The students and I decide on a topic and we share the pen writing. I invite students to come up and help me write letters, sight words, or be the space person. The children enjoy playing the teacher.

    Writing Conference:
    We have began our writing conference.

    Goal of the program:

    My goal inshaAllah is to help move each child towards their individual proficiency in writing. Working with small group at a time will enable me to assist and nourish each child's talent.

    Please note that students are not expected to write like an adult (fluently). The following writings are strongly encouraged and accepted.
    1. I w f a w. (writes beginning sound)
    2. I wt fr a wk. ( writes beginning and ending sound)
    3. I wnt fr a wlk. (writes all of the sounds they hear)
    4. I went for a walk. (Adult writing)

    Please note that I will inshaAllah only meet with 1 or 2 groups per week.

    Group Reading:
    We will continue practising guided Reading. Guided Reading allows us to work with small group of children with similar reading abilities. Each student will have  his/her book or mini booklet. We will take turn decoding and reading. We then played Phonetic games.


    Social and Personal Development:
    We are working on Getting Along unit. In this unit the students will build/improve the following skills:
    • Cooperation
    • problem solving
    • respect
    • Responsibility
    • Self-Control
    Math:
    My great detectives are working on problem math mashAllah.  In this unit we will practise:
    • counting skills
    • Number formation
    • Number recognition
    • Answering challenging questions.
     The last 2 weeks we explored the following challenging questions:
    1. Why do we study Math?
    2. How do numbers helps?
    3. Do we use numbers at home?
    4. Guessed how many letters are in your name, your friend's names.
    We will inshaAllah continue challenging our curious minds.


    Science:
    We are working on Living Things in the environment unit. In this unit we have learned:
    1. Environments and what kinds of environments do plants and animals live?
    2. How Land animals are different from Sea animals
    3. Sea Creatures
    4. Land Animals
    5. Animal Habitat
    6.  Living things and characteristics of living and living things
    Islamic Studies:
    We are working on the story of Prophet Yunis (as).
    Arabic:

    Last month,

    - Students participated in many of their favourite activities and games that helped them improve their Arabic language.

    The following was taugh:

    - Introducing the letters ع ، غ ، ف ، ق.
    - Meaningful story telling.
    - Singing Nasheeds.
    - Learning new vocabulary.
    - Describing some pictures with simple sentences
    .

    - Alhamdulilah we are now done with our monthly theme which was about the house " البيت ". The theme helped students to memorize some new senteces which enabled them to describe the house. A Nasheed  about the house was memorized by the students. Finally, the students drew beautiful and expressive pictures depicting homes.

      Reading group 4 and 5 had their guided reading. The children enjoyed reading with the teacher.

      Some facts about Guided Reading:

      1. Each is a reader with his/her own copy of a book
      2. Guided Reading is reading by the children, with the help of a  teacher as needed.

      Changing Sound

      Our field went well yesterday. Thank you for encouraging your child to follow the library rules.

      Today we practised changing beginning sounds to in order to create new words.

      Example:

      Cat: change the letter "C" . 

      The volunteers were asked to:
      1. Picked a letter from piles of words
      2. showed the letter to the class
      3. write the new word on the board.
      We practised reading the new word.

      Wow! MashaAlla!

      Wow! MashaAllah!
      I'm very impressed with SKs ability to decode and analyze text. SKs love story time.

      This week we read Elliot Fire Truck. We then discussed:
      1. The main character
      2. His characteristics
      3. How he was feeling and what he wanted
      Text to Text Connection:
      Elliot wanted to be a firefighter: what does this text remind you of?
      Text says: "We cannot all be firefighter" what does this remind you of?

      We also discussed the main problem and if the problem was solved?

      Social Skills:
      We discussed:
      1. Cooperation: what is cooperation and how does it help us? We read stories that focused on the topic.
      2. Self-Control: when we are angry what should we do? We read stories and poems that discussed the proper way of handling oneself.

      We practised reading words from Phonic book 6 P. 20. We then practised writing

      underneath pictures.

      Reading Group 4 and 5 did the work on their own. MashaAllah! Group 4 and 5 were excited to do the work on their own.Reading Group 3 and 1 copied the words from the board. Some friends from reading group 1 needed help with the sounds of SH, TH.

      Head lice Prevention

      Great way to prevent unwanted head lice!

       SK parent had shared this information with me. I hope it helps  
      1. Add drops of Tea Tree Oil to shampoo you normally use.
      2. Or add drops to water and put in a spray bottle. Mist hair each morning with this solution. Lice do not like this, so hair is kept free of unwanted guests.

      It comes in different sizes and packages. see image for example.

      Interactive Writing

      Yesterday, we practised interactive writing.

      The students and I decided on a topic together and shared the pen writing the sentence.  After discussing sometime we decided on 1 topic which was: talking flower. We then discussed how we would begin and end our sentence.

      Together we came up with:

      One day we saw a beautiful flower and it talk to us.

      Guided Reading

      Today we pratised guided Reading. Guided Reading allows us to work with small group of  children with similar reading abilities.  Each student had his/her mini booklet which we pactised reading together. We then played Phonetic games.   Today we worked with group 1 and 3. InshaAllah we will work with group 4 and 5 tomorrow.

      The is a story of the prophet Mohammad (saw) in English. Great move for kids. I would however, skip the battles, for it might be too much for some kids.

      The above video ties well with our Islamic Study unit: Mercy of the Prophet (saw).  In this unit the children learned the mercy of the prophet (saw) towards children and animals.

      Toy Sale April 18, 2012

      MashaAllah! We have  a great little authors and illustrators amongst us! Today we had our fist ever individual journal entry. The students wrote and illustrated their stories.

      In a couple of weeks we will inshaAllah publish our first ever book about the Mercy of our beloved Prophet Mohamamd (saw). The book is author and illustrated by the SKs.

      Morning Assembly

      Morning Assembly:
      The SKs entertained Abraar Schools friends during morning assembly with Nasheed about the 5 pillars of Islam, and the story of the Prophet Mohammad (saw). MashaAllah! The SKs did very well.

      Language:
      We read a story about things we need. We discussed about the story and then we wrote our journals.

      Math:
      • We learned about money.
      • We had fun pretend buying toys from our cashier using real money. 
      • The students will get a chance to play cashier or customers during play time.

      Language: Ch Sh Sound

      Assalamo Alaykum

      This week in language we learned the sound of "ch" and "sh". We also learned how to read "ch" and "sh" words. Please ask your child about the sound of the above letters.

      Math:

      We began our Shape unit. We learned about different shapes such as rectangle, square, triangle, circle, oval) and things/fruit that make the above shapes.

      Islamic Studies:
      We learned about the Mercy of the Prophet (saw) towards animals.

      Art: today during art class we combine Science and Art activity. The activity was about sense of taste.

      Activity: Supper Sticky

      Materials:
      Corn syrup, food colouring, sugar, and honey

      We explored tasting honey, sugar, and syrup. We also explored what happens when we add food colouring to syrup? Will the taste be different?

      We are holding our annual Toy Sale to help raise money for the Senior Kindergarten graduation. To assist us in our cause, we kindly request that you donate your gently used toys.       Phonics book 5p14

      Assalamoalaykum

      Gym: Time to Act
      I player was chosen to act out a sport while others mirror the activity. Then they guess the sport. Whoever got it right was then chosen.

      Purpose of this activity: to teach children new skills and build their confidence.

      Language:
      We practised saying names of pictures then we practised writing each word underneath the picture.

      Art:
      We had fun creating marble like painting uisng shaving cream and paints. see video

      Double Phonics Chant

      Language:

      Story:
      Slowly, Slowly, Slowly, said Sloth: From this story we learned to appreciate our differences. Children were encouraged to try playing in different stations and learn something new.

      We practised putting group of words into alphabetical order (page13).

      example:
      sun, fun, run, bun =bun, fun, run, sun

      We then practised writing uppercase letters.


      Show and Tell:

      Group 1 will inshaAllah have their show and tell.

      Gym:

      1. It's a Zoo out there! One Zookeeper will call out an animal then everyone will act like that animal.

      2. Have a ball: we will experiment with different balls. We will bounce, roll kick, through and catch variety of balls.

      Language:

      We covered all the phonetic letters and sounds included in Phonics Book # 5.

      We learned the sounds of: z, w, ng, v, and oo (short oo, and long OO). We are now working on review pages.

      We played varieties of fun and interactive Phonics Word Games and dramatic plays. These were designed to:
      • Enhance their oral communication skills.
      • Improve their public speaking skills.

      Also, through these games the children learned to cooperate as a team.

      Math:

      We finished our Data management and Probability Unit. In this unit we combined Math with the Health/Physical Education. We had fun learning about our friend’s favorite fruit and when our friends go to bed.

      We played variety of interactive Math games. The students learned how to sort, classify, compare objects, and make representations of their observations, using concrete graphs (using blocks).



      Islamic Studies:

      We had fun learning about our beloved and Merciful Prophet Muhammad (saw). The children enjoyed listening to stories of Prophet Muhammad (saw).

      Science:

      We are learning about how things move. We learned how different animals and human being move, and Major organs that help us move. So far we learned about our brain, heart and how to keep these 2 organs happy and healthy (eg. eating health, exercising, and reading quran).



      Arabic:

      We had a lot of fun learning the sounds of the letters from Alif (أ) to Taa (ط).
      -Students did many activities that improved their oral skills. i.e...Describing pictures, dramatic plays, story comprehention, repeating sentences and singing nasheeds like Nabiyyunal Kareem- The months in Islam.

      Field Trip:

      We had fun at the Museum of Civilization. The children enjoyed learning how to bake. SK would like to thank all of the parent volunteers who assisted us on our first very exciting trip to the Museum of Civilization! We couldn’t have gone without you.
